Wow… such a naive view of both traditional cultures and the modern life dependencies. Sure, Gorge is phenomenal, but unless you have substantial resources it is very expensive to live there. So, if you have no other obligations and limitless financial resources, follow this guy’s advice.

Yeah man long term I’m trying to have a couple places to stay, so when I don’t like the weather I can head to the other spot. Also want the benefits of not being in the same place all the time, like interacting with different people or sceneries.

Crissy is only one of many places to sail in the Bay Area. While the Gorge is the wind sports vacation Mecca in North America, if you count every sailing venues in the Bay Area, I bet you'd find just as many people if not more as the Gorge. BTW, I went to the Gorge twice but got skunked.

Most people have to work...which most often requires staying in one place. Also, a week-long vacation in Hood River in the summer can cost several thousand dollars. A house in Hood River is a million dollars. You live in a bubble. Maybe your nomad logic would make sense if swell paid and waves fed bellies.

Another great post sir. Just got back from a week in the gorge. Rented an Airbnb in white salmon and had epic conditions almost every day. I feel truly blessed to live within three hours of this magical place.

Sherman and the bay have been sort of a bummer this summer. Hood river is so cool. You can see why people that can will trade seasons between the gorge and Baja or Maui. But you have to admit that it’s a privileged lifestyle that only a few can truly swing due to family and spouses and your vocation and of course your financial setup. Cheers to those who can! The goal for the rest of us is to stay in shape and stay stoked till we get there

This is the future. A lot of the guys from Florida are hitting the Gorge and other places during the summertime. It sucks here at the moment and it only lasts a couple of months, but it’s brutal. I think the natives were following the food, we are following stoke. It’s nice to be able to do these things and something to look forward to as well.

Gotta have roots and wings. Being totally "unattached" ain't all its cracked up to be.

I “compete” in big mountain freeride snowboarding. I’ve podiumed, but it’s not really something that pays bills. I do it because it forces you to confront yourself and your abilities. You are forced out of your comfort zone and by doing so achieve otherwise difficult perspectives on yourself & your sport. In individual activities it is all too easy to lie to yourself; in certain areas the ego swells with pride, in others the self-critique can be extreme. Competition does not need to be cutthroat; it can be community built on honesty. Peers motivated to watch intently and are genuinely 😂excited when you have a real break through. I don’t always feel amazing when I “lose.” But it’s usually more a disappointment in myself and a motivation to look at the world differently: how did I hold myself back from what was reasonably possible? Am I missing something in the way I read the mountain? Or my equipment? Or my training? In the moment I might feel bad that I crashed but the process of tinkering and failure and discovery with competition as a North Star is the real joyful process. If all you valued was feeling good in the moment; you probably would’ve taken up heroin instead of wing-foiling. The suffering of sport & competition is fake; it is a pleasure; it is a privilege to be able to fail and succeed at activities that are meaningless outside of our own moving meditation and onlookers entertainment. As far as the colonial drivel; it’s all evolution. Victims of success. Freestyle snowboarding used to be young and new and mostly taken up by weirdos. It was edgy and entertaining and attracted eyeballs and money. It’s less artistry now and more snow gymnastics. Which, if you are someone with that talent; why would you go into gymnastics when snowboarders make 10x as much? Because quite frankly, it’s much easier to understand and relate to. Football dominates over track. MMA over Boxing. If a sport fails to adapt, talent & interest will move along. In 20 years we might all be watching video games & quidditch instead of the Super Bowl. For much the same reasons no one cares about Greco-Roman wrestling anymore.

Makes no sense to me. Everywhere else cities turn their waterfronts into attractions and places for the public to congregate and enjoy. In the bay they seem to actively want to destroy it. Cant believe it took so long to remove the RVs off toll plaza beach.

Words have more than one meaning. Context of their use is usually obvious to it's meaning. Victory in sports doesn't mean anyone was "destroyed". To the victor goes the spoils, whatever they be, whether monetary or just bragging rights or the acknowledgement of peers. Competition pushes athletes to greater heights. How would we ever know what those heights are without the competition. If you're not into competition, no one is forcing you to, or to try to be your best. Nothing wrong with just having fun either. Hoot away and share your joy with the sky. If I hear you, I'll probably smile and say "right on brother".

Hello Clay my name is Leonard I was in Sausalito yesterday and walked to Baker Beach at the coast guard assembly area at base of bridge, I talked to 2 gentleman who FOIL WAKEBOARD across the bay to Berkley on a 3,500$ foilboard, was that YOU. ?
